Gonubie Bird Sanctuary
The Gonubie Bird Sanctuary in East London, South Africa, is currently undergoing a significant facelift aimed at restoring its natural beauty and reintroducing its diverse bird population. Spearheaded by Tony Wessels from the Gonubie Bird Sanctuary NPO, this initiative focuses on removing invasive plant species that have encroached upon the sanctuary’s wetlands and vegetation.
The goal is to create an ideal habitat for the return of approximately 160 bird species that once thrived here, including Little Grebes, Purple Herons, Kingfishers, and Southern Red Bishops. As the sanctuary is revitalized, it promises to once again become a haven for birdwatchers and nature lovers, offering a tranquil escape just outside East London. In addition to enhancing the sanctuary’s natural environment, the project aims to reconnect the community with the sanctuary’s rich biodiversity, ensuring that it remains a cherished retreat for both wildlife and visitors alike.
